Dylan Johnson: A Future Medical Patent Lawyer in the Making

Eighth-grader Dylan has big dreams and an even bigger heart. With ambitions of becoming a medical patent lawyer, she’s already using her gifts to blend science, advocacy, and justice—three passions that Odyssey has helped her nurture and grow.

For Dylan, Odyssey isn’t just another program; it’s the place where she discovered her confidence, her voice, and her power to turn challenges into catalysts for change.

Odyssey has really helped me feel more confident in my ability to apply stuff that may have been challenging to real-life situations and helped improve my speed in recognizing problems along with their solutions.
— Dylan says

Finding Strength, Solutions, and Self-Belief

Odyssey has helped Dylan sharpen her analytical skills, deepen her curiosity, and see herself as someone capable of tackling real-world issues. What once felt difficult now feels possible. What once seemed abstract now becomes meaningful. Odyssey encouraged her to stretch her thinking and trust her ability to find answers.

But for Dylan, the magic of Odyssey extends far beyond academics.

She describes Odyssey as “so much more than a summer camp.” To her, it is:

  • A learning space that pushes her to think bigger

  • A safe haven where she feels understood and encouraged

  • A home filled with connection, purpose, and joy

Each summer, she returns eager for new challenges, new friendships, and new opportunities to grow.

Odyssey gives students such as myself something to look forward to each and every year after school ends. It helps you build connections and form unlikely friendships that end up lasting a lifetime.

A Student Leader Inspired to Change the World

Dylan’s Odyssey journey hasn’t only shaped her identity—it has fueled her desire to give back.

After reading A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park during her time in Odyssey, Dylan felt compelled to take action. Drawing from the book’s themes of resilience and global responsibility, she launched a passion project through her role as secretary of her school’s Jr. Beta Club, working to help villages in other countries gain consistent access to clean, safe water.

Her academic achievements shine just as brightly. Dylan recently won Young Georgia Authors for her district with her poem “The American Dream in Achebe’s Eyes,” a thoughtful reflection on Nigerian writer Chinua Achebe and his experience as an immigrant in America.

A Bright Future Ahead

With her compassion, determination, and growing leadership, Dylan is on a path to change lives—first through her advocacy for global access to clean water, and one day in courtrooms and laboratories as a medical patent lawyer.

And through it all, Odyssey remains one of the places that helped her discover just how powerful she truly is.
